An international competition, the Rose of Tralee festival is celebrated among Irish communities all over the world each year. The Rose of Tralee festival takes its inspiration from a ballad of the same name about a woman called Mary. Why? Because her beauty was called The Rose of Tralee.
To celebrate the 50th birthday of the festival in 2009, it has been confirmed that 50 roses will take part in the 2009 competition rather than the approximately 30 who take part every other year.
